Collectible Meerschaum pipes lined up for May 25 auction

Meerschaum — geologically known as sepiolote — comes from a German word meaning “sea foam.” Pipes made from sepiolite are said to be ideal for smoking tobacco, because the mineral serves as a natural filter to absorb nicotine, but it never burns. On May 25 at noon, Jasper52 will offer an 84-lot collection of collectible Meerschaum pipes.

Glimpse American lives in May 19 collectible photography auction

Today, we seem to know everything about everything when it comes to photography. Camera functions automatically date-stamp images as we take them. If we post photos online, we tag the people shown in the photo, and they often respond, confirming their identities. But printed, paper photos from the decades before digital aren’t so forthcoming. Unless someone bothered to write useful information on the back of the photo, what we see is mostly a mystery. We can guess at what’s going on, and come up with our own theories, but we can never know for sure.

On May 19, starting at noon Eastern time, Jasper52 will offer 102 lots of collectible photographs. Some of the images are well-documented, but others are less so. All are intriguing and worth a look.

No swords required: fight for Viking treasures online, May 12

Vikings get a bad rap. Of course, some of that is deserved; there’s no nice, polite way to raid a village. But the long-ago, long-vanished people who called themselves Vikings – the Scandinavians who reside in what is now Denmark, Sweden, and Norway – behaved in ways that might seem surprising. Archaeologists now believe Vikings bathed as often as once a week, in contrast to their southern European counterparts. It makes sense, then, that Vikings liked to adorn their bodies with alluring jewelry. Jasper52‘s Viking, Ancient, & Medieval Jewelry sale, which begins at 2 pm Eastern time on May 12, provides ample evidence of this last fact.

When they are done expertly, as these are, the artworks have the power to capture and hold the attention of all, not just loyal worshippers. On May 12, starting at 4 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will host an auction of 15th-20th century religious icons.

World of possibilities in Apr 27 antiquarian map sale

Buckaroo Banzai, lead character of the eponymous 1984 cult movie, said, “No matter where you go, there you are.” A good map lets you identify exactly where you are, but it’s perfectly OK to treat maps purely as works of art, or as a reminder of good times enjoyed in great places. On April 27, starting at 8 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will stage a sale of 16th – 20th century antiquarian maps, selected by expert Steve Kovacs.
