Americana, Folk Art & Outsider Art spotlighted in New York, March 24

On Thursday, March 24, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will hold a sale of Americana, Folk Art and Outsider Art. The 534-lot auction is, as always, curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert on tramp art, folk art and Americana. Featured in the sale lineup are a trio of museum-quality portrait dolls dressed in silk and satin wedding attire, created in the first half of the 20th century; duck decoys, a wood carving of a Great Dane dog, a Southern country abacus, a quartet of Beatrix Potter Vienna bronzes, and a generous selection of quilts, including a circa-1880s Victorian silk crazy quilt.

Additionally, there are checkerboards, trade signs, including one touting ‘Camp Read, The Personality Camp for Girls;’ and another for the White Goose Inn, which takes the form of a white goose with the word INN painted in black on its body. The list of highlights continues with a Mose Tolliver painting on wood of a cut watermelon, an orange and black plaid Princeton reunion jacket with a badge declaring the wearer a member of the class of 1932, needlework and schoolgirl samplers, led by an 1804 contribution from Abigail Otis of Scituate, Massachusetts; a 19th-century mochaware pitcher decorated with a blue band, and a cast-iron candy store scale.

Jasper52 hosts Fashion Fights Cancer benefit auction, March 8

Jasper52 will host a benefit auction titled Fashion Fights Cancer on Tuesday, March 8 to raise funds for the charity of the same name. The start time is 6pm Eastern. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Founded in 2004, Fashion Fights Cancer (FFC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that offers innovative and therapeutic programs in fashion and design. FFC also acts as a sanctuary for cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones, and seeks to empower those who have been affected by cancer in the United States and internationally. Jasper52 embraces Americana, folk and outsider art, Feb. 24

A needlework sampler stitched in New Hampshire in 1793, a large carved dolphin head from the bannister of a staircase, and a circa-1910 tin Halloween lantern will likely earn top lot status at Jasper52’s Americana, Folk Art, and Outsider Art auction, which will be held Thursday, February 24 at 6 pm Eastern time. Other items in the 558-lot sale include a circa-1920s vanity recovered from an Odd Fellows lodge, fitted with secret compartments; a Staffordshire bust of George Washington; a carved Art Nouveau stand; stoneware jugs; trade signs, including one that boasts the single word ‘CHOICE’ in white letters on a black background; a Bakongo maternity figure; windmill weights and whirligigs; a goose decoy from Prince Edward Island; a swing handle Nantucket basket; an elaborate fretwork bird cage; numerous quilts, including a 1930s example with a Wedding Ring pattern and blue accents; an Art Deco nutcracker in the shape of an elephant’s head and a large folk art robot made from found objects.

Great images captured in Gravures & Heliogravures sale, Feb. 22

On Tuesday, February 22, starting at 11 am Eastern time, Jasper52 will present a sale of Gravures and Heliogravures. the auction consists of just 74 lots but includes some of the greatest names and images in photography. Several photographs by Diane Arbus are featured, among them a brooding night shot of Disneyland Castle in California; several by Henri Cartier-Bresson, including a compelling shot of a cell in a model prison in the United States; and photographs by Margaret Bourke-White, Tina Modotti, Cecil Beaton, Horst P. Horst, Eadweard Muybridge, Erwin Blumenfeld and Lewis Hine. The Man Ray offerings include his iconic 1924 work Le Violon d’Ingres (The Violin of Ingres); Helmut Newton is represented by his masterpiece Big Nude III, Henrietta, Paris, 1980; and Robert Doisneau’s contribution is his 1950 black-and-white Le Baiser de l’hotel de ville (The Kiss by the Hotel de Ville).
